Kenley Observatory Maps

30th September 2009

The maps below show the location of our observatory at Kenley. The observatory is located on the bridle path that starts in Waterhouse Lane Kenley. Waterhouse Lane is located off Hayes Lane, Kenley.

The nearest postcode is CR8 5EP

The TfL Journey Planner will (may ?) help you get to our observatory by public transport. However note that the observatory is some distance from the nearest public transport and some services do not run in the evening. It is possible to get to the observatory from the West by foot or horse ! via Waterhouse Lane that is a bridle way (not passable to cars). However the TfL journey planner does not like bridle ways and footpaths so might send you a much longer alternative route. Try Caterham Drive junction with Rydon's Lane as the destination ( this is opposite the west end of Waterhouse Lane. You will need a (red) torch and stout shoes as the bridle way is steep and un-surfaced.

Advanced options

if you are coming from Purley Cross (near Tesco’s). Take the A22 towards Whyteleafe. After a mile and half, turning right for Kenley Station. You are now in Hayes Lane. See general map below:-

Here is a closer map showing Hayes Lane from Kenley Station. It is a long windy road with humps in places.  After a mile and half to two miles, you come to a mini roundabout. This is the junction with Hayes Lane and Old Lodge Lane (see map below).

From the mini-roundabout, go ahead round an s bend. As you come out of the bend you will see an street sign on the right saying, Waterhouse Lane. Turn right and drive/walk down this lane. Note it is a track, so there will some potholes. Don't forget stout shoes or boots and a small torch to see under  the trees

After a 100 metres, you note some bollards ahead of you, a house to the left and a track going off to the right. Take the right track, for 40 metres, through a gate and on to the observatory; which you will see as a large white dome and a smaller dome.

Here is a satellite image. The observatory is at the top the picture. The observatory domes are the round white objects
