Lx200 Telescope Instructions |
13th January 2008 |
14th October - Minor updates
23rd September Telescope User Guide Updated & Revised Appendix 1 now on web site.
Our Lx200 telescope is available for use by trained members at our Observatory at Kenley.
If you are a member and wish to be trained in the use of the telescope please email our Astronomer on the link on the Contacts Page.
To ensure that users know how to use the telescope efficiently and without damaging it we have developed our own user guide to assist you. You can download it below - you will need to download appendix 1 separately.
Latest updates & tips that have not yet been incorporated into the Users Guide are on the New Telescope Information Page located here. All authorised users are asked to check this page before using the telescope to ensure they have the latest information.

A useful link when you become more familiar with the telescope. There is a lot of good material here but you really need to understand the telescope before you delve to deeply into here. It is however useful for answering questions on items that the Meade manual is not clear on. |
|
|
To help you with the magnification & field of view of the telescope this is a copy of the output from my telescope calculation spreadsheet set up for our 14" Meade at Kenley. This shows the eyepieces that we have that are of reasonable quality & condition to use on the telescope. |
|
|
|
This is a version of the spreadsheet used to produce the information above and the table lower down the page. you will need either Excel or Open Office to view and change it. You can also download an Excel Viewer from Microsoft but you are very restricted on what you can do. |

Modified Meade Alignment Instructions (Draft Only) |
For Telescope Support Staff Only: The instructions in the Meade Manual for aligning the telescope on a Polar Mount are confusing as they keep referring to parts of the instructions for aligning the telescope on an equatorial wedge. This document is the draft of my attempt to try to combine the Polar alignment instructions with the appropriate parts of the Equatorial alignment instructions. In draft one I have cut and pasted the equatorial instructions into the appropriate pages but have not attempted to edit out the parts that are not required as it is not clear (to me at least !) which bits of the equatorial procedure are not required when aligning the telescope on a polar mount. Subsequent versions of this document should have the surplus instructions removed. |
Draft One - 24th November 2005 |
The guide is still changing as we find out more things so check back here for the latest version.
You may like to save the documents to your own computer - particularly if you only have a slow connection as some are quite large.
If you have any comments please send them to our Astronomer on the link on the Contacts Page.
The link above is to the Meade Manual for the Lx200GPS (in PDF Format). When you read this concentrate on the functions on the AutoStar controller and the parts of the telescope. You don't need to know all the sections about assembling and setting the telescope up as they have already been done for you. Also ignore the parts about how to align the telescope - the parts on the Alt-Az mounting do not apply as the Kenley Telescope is on a wedge. Also a lot of the appendix on aligning a telescope on a wedge is not required as the wedge is (or will be shortly !) correctly aligned.
I have been asked to provide a glossary to explain some of the terms used in the guide (and the Meade Manual) - The problem is deciding which terms are 'common knowledge' amongst astronomers and which need to be explained. If you have any (printable !) suggestions for words that should be included please email them to me at the 'Astronomer' address on the Contacts Page and I will put them on a separate web page.
The output of the telescope calculation spreadsheet is shown below if you just wish to look up the FOV of the eyepiece you are using.
